Roof anatomy
Shingle roofs, flat roofs, siding and gutters, cut open so you can see every part. Tap or hover over a number to see what it's called, what it does and what happens when it fails.
Shingle roof
A shingle roof is built in layers, from the wood up. We peeled this one back so you can see every layer.
1. Rafters
WHAT IT DOES
The wood beams that hold the whole roof up.
IF IT FAILS
Years of leaks can soak and weaken them. A sagging roof line could mean a rafter is damaged.
Parts on top of the roof
These are the spots where something comes through the roof or meets a wall. Most roof leaks start at one of them.
1. Chimney flashing
WHAT IT DOES
Metal around the base of the chimney that keeps water from running in beside it.
IF IT FAILS
Rust, gaps or caulk instead of metal. It is one of the most common leaks we find.
Not sure which part is causing your problem? That is what the inspection is for.
