Hire smart

How to verify a roofer before you hire

Ask every contractor for the same proof. A professional should make verification easy and put the agreement in writing.

1

Verify the license

Get the Illinois roofing license number and verify it through the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation's official License Lookup. Also confirm local registration and permit requirements for your address.

    2

    Verify insurance directly

Ask the contractor's insurer to send you a current certificate showing general liability and workers' compensation. Do not rely only on a screenshot supplied by the contractor.

      3

      Read the written contract

      • Detailed scope and materials
      • Total price and payment schedule
      • Start and completion expectations
      • Written warranty terms
      • How changes are approved
      4

      Ask about permits

Ask who pulls the permit, what it costs, whether it is included and which inspections are required.

        5

        Confirm the business

Look for a real local address and review patterns across independent sources. Ask for recent, relevant projects—not just a total star count.

          6

          Compare more than price

Compare scope, materials, workmanship, communication, warranty and price. Be cautious with large upfront payments or same-day pressure.
